A hefty helping of fall fashion

By LEIGH GROGAN
Mail carriers hate this time of year. So do the folks who have to stock bookstore shelves.

Why? Because it's time to deliver those overloaded September fall fashion magazines.

We did this experiment several years ago, so we thought it might be fun to "weigh in" again with just how bulky they are.

To keep things official, the magazines were weighed in The Sacramento Bee's mailroom on the official scale _ not on something in someone's bathroom.

And keep in mind, for some of the mags, this is their biggest-revenue issue. Usually the bigger the magazine, the more advertising fills the pages.

Here's how they sized up:

_ Vogue: 3.65 pounds, 754 pages. Clearly the "fattest" of the nine that were weighed, Vogue opted for actress Kirsten Dunst on the cover, dressed in full period costume for her upcoming movie role as Marie Antoinette. Interestingly enough, Vogue proclaimed in its August issue the return of the supermodel as the face of fashion with Linda Evangelista on the cover.

_ InStyle: 2.95 pounds, 604 pages. Cover model: Drew Barrymore on learning "to love your own body."

_ Elle: 2.60 pounds, 560 pages. Cover model: Lindsay Lohan "confronts the rumors."

_ Harper's Bazaar: 2.25 pounds, 504 pages. Cover model: Gwyneth Paltrow wearing a $50,000 Dolce & Gabbana gown.

_ Lucky: 1.90 pounds, 386 pages. Cover model: Eva Mendes and "her glamorous inspirations."

_Glamour: 1.70 pounds, 404 pages. Cover models: Emmy Rossum, Eva Longoria and Sheryl Crow for a story on looking good at ages 20, 30 and 40. What happened to 50?

_ Marie Claire: 1.45 pounds, 284 pages. Cover model: Maggie Gyllenhaal, "and we thought her brother was hot."

_ Allure: 1.20 pounds, 244 pages. Cover model: Christina Aguilera on "Are we in therapy now?"

_ Shop Etc.: 0.90 pounds, 208 pages. No cover model but a lead story on "314 fashion scores for your body and budget."
