Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds
On April 8, 1974, I remember sitting in a wooden rocking chair in my grandparents' family room and cheering as Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run to break Babe Ruth's record.
I was so impressed that I felt compelled to memorialize the event. So I wrote my name, the date and "I saw Hank Aaron's 715th home run in this chair" on a piece of paper and taped it to the bottom of the chair.
What a difference 33 years makes.
In 2007 a part of me wants to avoid the TV at all costs rather than see Barry Bonds break Aaron's record.
Another part of me wants to see it happen - it is newsworthy and historic, after all. But there is no joy this time. I only want to see if the fans boo and jeer and give Bonds the disrespect he deserves.
My grandparents' rocking chair is long gone now. It's a good thing, too. If I were sitting in the chair when Bonds hits his 756th home run, I'd probably break it into smithereens.
