ShareThisWith resumes flooding into employers, job applicants are getting creative. One sent a photo of her cat above her resume. Another listed God as a reference -- no phone number or email address listed.
A lot of the resumes from these job hunters either go straight to the inactive file or the waste-paper basket -- but not before giving the human resources department a few laughs first.
A study released by the job search website CareerBuilder.com said that more than half the resumes employers receive get less than one minute of scrutiny from the person assigned to screen them. Eighteen percent told researchers they spent less than 30 seconds.
And job hopefuls are using tactics on their resumes that run from the cute to the bizarre in an effort to stand out.
Hiring managers say one job seeker listed her hobby as "alligator watching." One sent a 24-page resume summing up five years of work experience, and a man listed "Master of Time and Universe" as part of his job experience.
"Due to the economy a lot of people are doing everything they can to get noticed. Only sometimes they're so off-the-wall, it backfires," said Lisa Fuess, president of Cutting Edge Staffing, a Temecula employment service.
Fuess has received numerous resumes with the person's photo at the top. Sometimes the job hopeful is a woman who is posed provocatively, an unprofessional image.
CareerBuilder.com, who interviewed more than 2,500 private-sector hiring managers, said in a statement that the applicant's best strategy is still the simplest one: Let the prospective boss know very concisely how he or she can contribute to the firm's bottom line.
Trying to jazz up a resume might work if it was used in conjunction with good qualifications, said Hannah Kirby, who co-founded Redux Beverages with her husband Jamie in Murrieta, Calif.
Redux Beverages tweaked some sensitivities a few years ago by marketing the energy drink Cocaine and another called Brawndo, which was spun from the 2006 comedy "Idiocracy." Because those products are marketed to young consumers, Kirby said she might overlook a job applicant who claimed he won a frat house Nintendo championship. It would mean he was part of Redux's demographic.
"But if they don't have the qualifications or the education, maybe they spent too much time playing Nintendo," Kirby said.
Job hopefuls are trying to show prospective employers that they would bring some personality to the work place, said Bobby Spiegel, executive vice president of the Corona (Calif.) Chamber of Commerce. Many businesses are looking for that, Spiegel said.
But he's not an advocate of excessive personality on a resume.
"I know of people who are changing their fields, and they're now listing less on a resume because they're tired of being seen as overqualified," Spiegel said.
