Ask Carley: Getting married at home

Q: We can't afford a wedding at a hall, so we're having an at-home wedding. What should we know?

A: First, make sure you have the space to accommodate guests -- and tables and servers too. If you're planning on seating everyone outside, remember that if the weather takes a turn for the worse, you'll have to get everyone inside. You may need to trim your guest list to make that happen. Next, it makes sense to hire a wedding coordinator. Find one in your area on TheKnot.com/local. She'll be able to look at your home with a fresh eye -- and also know how to fit everything in there. You'll have to rent everything from tables and chairs to portable bathrooms and probably a generator to supply the electricity. Have your vendors stop by to check out the scene and see what extras they'll need to bring to turn your home into a fully functional wedding venue.
