Ask Carley: Don't tell guests not to wear white at the wedding

Q: What's a polite way for me to let my guests know that I want to be the only one wearing white at my wedding?

A: There's no polite way to do this, so don't. No rule says that only the bride can wear white at a wedding, but there's sort of an unspoken rule about this, and most guests are happy to oblige.

Even if someone shows up wearing white, it's not like anyone will mistake her for the bride. You'll be the one in the wedding dress, with your hair and makeup looking flawless. Anyone else wearing white will just look a little foolish. This should be the least of your concerns.

Dress Code

Hi Carley, my fiancee and i are planning on having a beach wedding and we've decided that we want all our guests to be in WHITE. Thing is, we can't seem to figure out the best way to politely inform our female guests to NOT wear floor length dresses as well as any crowd-stopping accessories or jewelry. how should we word our "wedding attire instructions" so as not to sound TOO demanding?

thanks!
