Golf Tips: Nelson was greatest PGA Professional

John Byron Nelson Jr., a World Golf Hall of Fame inductee, PGA of America life member and one of the most dominating and gracious players to ever play the game, passed away last week at the age of 94.

Nelson was without a doubt one of the greatest PGA Professionals _ as a player, golf instructor and global ambassador for the game.

Do you often think that learning golf is hopeless? There is so much information out there you don't know what tip will work for you. Or, maybe you try all the tips and hope one sticks. It's not that the information is worn, it's just that it doesn't fit you, your golf swing, and your body build.

Also, how we process information is sometimes a problem. Some of us are analytical thinkers and we get some information about our golf swing and we break it down into a lot of pieces. I suppose that is like writing your name and trying to copy it backward _ you just can't do it.

Soft Americans get what we deserve

This is what happens when we coddle our kids because we're more concerned with not damaging their self-esteem than teaching them to take on challenges, to fight through adversity, to compete.

This is what happens when we stop keeping score in youth sports, refuse to reward outstanding performance and give out trophies merely for participating, because we don't want our kids to think less of themselves and know the disappointment that accompanies defeat.

This is what happens when we tell our kids that winning isn't important, that losing is OK, that being pretty good is good enough.

We get soft.

Tiger's greatness hard to measure

It's a crazy thing, but as I watched Tiger Woods' astounding Monday performance in suburban Boston two weeks ago, I was reminded of Muhammad Ali. Reaching for perspective, people quite properly summoned the names of Michael Jordan, Roger Federer, a few others _ but for me, Tiger's masterpiece mirrored Ali against Cleveland (Big Cat) Williams in the fall of 1966.
