Observations through the first two days of the U.S. Open tennis in New York City:

-- After winning a match that started at 11 p.m. Eastern time, Andy Roddick cheerfully wondered what other major sporting event routinely runs past midnight. Answer: none -- and if you're in New York for the occasion, you know it's cool. Wouldn't work anywhere else.
