A yearning for yesteryear has gripped fashion for the past several years, and nostalgia appears to influence the American style scape even more as fall lines arrive.
For women, the mod influence and '40s-inspired looks translate into higher hemlines, waist-defining silhouettes, wider pant legs and trapeze cuts.

You might not recognize it during a stroll through the local mall, but modesty apparently is in fashion again among young women.
Impossible, you may think, as you pass teenage shoppers showing off bare midriffs and shoulders.
But according to a new book, North America is witnessing the beginnings of a Britney backlash, a return to a less-promiscuous, more innocent time.
Wendy Shalit makes a case for this youth-led rebellion in her book "Girls Gone Mild" (Random House, $25.95, 352 pages).
At the same time, Web sites like ModestByDesign, ModestApparelUSA and DressModestly are promoting the idea that it's possible to be cute, stylish and modest.

Here's a concept: Don't just read your magazine; wear it.
The pitch is from the Sweden-based company, T-post, creator, if it does say so itself, of "the first trendy, smart and wearable magazine."
It goes on: "Just as one would subscribe to W, Der Spiegel or The New York Times, fashionistas and news junkies alike can get current events printed on designer T-shirts."
The image on the Web site www.t-post.se shows two young people in their T-shirts (and underwear -- don't know what that's all about).

Dominique Barteet, founder of Quick Change Artist, appears to have the solution.
