PEORIA, Ariz. - Two weeks into spring training and three big-league players have already been arrested by police for driving under the influence -- a trend the Seattle Mariners are trying to fight.

For some players, it is a skill set, a matter of moving where the coaches place you -- but for Jack Wilson, defense is a matter of science.

"At the plate, I'm a pest. I put the ball in play, foul off pitches, I can bunt and with two strikes I spread out at the plate and hit different," the new Mariners shortstop said. "Defense is my thing. I love the science of defense."

DANA POINT, Calif. -- Although representatives from all 30 major league teams are huddled in a posh resort here, the most startling rumor of the day -- and yes, it involved the Seattle Mariners -- came from Japan.

SEATTLE -- Four games into June, the number of things the Seattle Mariners have not yet done this season remains a can't-do list that helps explain a season of utter frustration. The team has not, for instance, won more than three games in a row - or rallied to win a game it trailed after eight innings. The Mariners have not overcome a deficit larger than two runs to win a game.
