KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - When Dr. Diane Hendrix shines her light and gazes into the gold-flecked eyes of a bald eagle, she sees more than rods and cones, retinas and corneas.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In the warm, welcoming lobby of Woodlawn Christian Church, Pastor Charles Beckett talked at length about what his late daughter couldn't speak of, at least not in Afghanistan: her deep and abiding faith.

Dr. Paul Naylor spends only three weeks of each year at San Hermano Pedro Hospital in Antigua, Guatemala.
But he spends the other 49 weeks thinking about it.
He checks airfares, which have nearly tripled since his first trip 10 years ago.
He sends out fundraising letters, citing 150 major surgeries performed on poor Guatemalans last year by Knoxville doctors.
