In adulthood people will spend any amount of money, seek any therapy, and commit any act just to prove their parents were right. The pursuit to become what parents tell us we are is indelible on our lives.You have to wonder with someone's passing -- especially someone who has whittled at the wood our society is made from -- whose instructions that person was following.
Beware of the bygones
With the presidential campaigns congealing into solidarity camps, the air is clearing over old issues. For instance, Hillary and Barack were in Unity, N.H., with only complimentary things to say about each other.
Don't divert the immigration debate
Writer V.S. Naipaul, who won the 2001 Nobel Prize for Literature, once said, "Democracy is not about voting. It is about debate." Now that we are close to deciding who the debaters will be in the presidential election, what issues will they battle over?The economy and health care are perennials. Iraq was up for discussion during the last presidential cycle.
Hate talk, the sound and the fury
In late April, National Council of La Raza chief Janet Murguia gave a rousing speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Talking about broadcast media, she said, "Harsh rhetoric has filled the immigration debate with code words that demonize and dehumanize not just immigrants but Latinos as a threat to the American way of life."
As globe shrinks, gray matter matters
The scientific evidence is starting to come in. It seems we are not graying enough nor at an early enough age.
