Treasures: A penny for your thoughts
Dear Helaine and Joe: I am enclosing photos of a coin (with an American Indian holding a bow and arrow on one side). I have owned it for more than 25 years, and for some reason, I've held onto it because I wonder if it might be valuable. Could you tell me if this coin is worth keeping? -- B.J.D., Southfield, Mich.
Treasures: A hand in the cookie jar
Dear Helaine and Joe: Enclosed is a picture of a cookie jar left in a cottage that we bought in New Hampshire more than 30 years ago. I would like information on it if possible. The only marking on the bottom says "Baker 24." It is in perfect condition, with no cracks or chips. Thank you. -- A.K., Canton, Mass.
Treasures: As American as apple pie
DEAR HELAINE AND JOE: These dessert plates are actually too beautiful to be used for that purpose. There are six identical plates in pristine condition, and they are marked "Crest-o-Gold," "Safin" and "Warranted 22k." We believe their origins to be European, but any information would be appreciated. -- K.G., Stuart, Fla.
Treasures: Was this box from Napoleon's estate?
Are you able to help me with this Limoges box that was left to me by my mother? I recall her saying the box was brought to this country from France by my great-grandmother and that it was from Napoleon's estate. I believe it was produced in the first half of the 19th century, but I cannot identify the "N" and crown mark.
Thank you,
A.S., Augusta, Ga.
Dear A.S.:
Treasures: Valuing an old painting
Dear Helaine and Joe:
I have a very old painting that has been in my family for many years. It is thought to be from the 1400s, but all I really know is that it came to this country from Venice sometime in the late 1800s. It is 38 by 47 inches. There is no signature, but I have been told it might have been cut from a larger painting to make it smaller.
Thank you,
D.C.
Treasures: Valuing an Italian Renaissance-style chair
Dear Helaine and Joe:
My husband does not see the beauty of this chair, which has been in my family since the 1960s or '70s. What can you tell me about it?
Thank you,
N.B., Fort Myers, Fla.
Dear N.B.:
Treasures: A coverlet from long ago
Dear Helaine and Joe:
This coverlet belonged to my great-great-grandmother. Do you have any information about it? It is a double-weave coverlet with a square that reads "Erie County, N.Y. 1838."
Thank you,
B. McD., Golden, Colo.
Dear B. McD:
Treasures: Valuing an old book about New Hampshire
Dear Helaine and Joe:
I found this book while cleaning out my barn. It is titled "New Hampshire for Summer Homes" and is the second edition published in 1904. There are about four pages at the end that look like they have been torn or eaten by something. Other than that, the book is in good condition. Can you tell me anything about it? Would anyone have an interest in it?
Treasures: One man's tool is another man's treasure
Dear Helaine and Joe,
Do my antique wood clamps have any monetary value? Thank you -- E.B., Alexandria, Va.
