Redding Record Searchlight Opinion
50-Word Dash: Sept. 5, 2008
A frightening prospect: In the past 20 years, the most potentially frightening name in the political arena was President Quayle. Now a potentially more threatening name has appeared: President Palin.

Thomasson: The GOP's ‘hockey mom' is a contender
The Democrats now know they have their hands full with Sarah Palin. If there was any doubt that the self-proclaimed "hockey mom" governor of Alaska could hold her own in the national political arena, it was dispelled by her performance at the Republican National Convention.

he liberal Democrats are exposing their true colors with Sarah Palin. They're all for women's rights, women being successful and even being president — unless you are Republican and conservative.

>As an automobile driver, I shall endure the 120 hours of the Cypress Avenue Bridge closure with annoyance. If, however, I were a pedestrian, bicyclist, or user of an electric scooter type wheelchair, I would be very concerned that there is, in actuality, only one greatly extended route to get across a river that connects many people from the east to churches, medical centers, the library, and those from the west to vet care, shops and fast food.

Palin's privacy vs. her public stances
How sensitive is Sen. John McCain's campaign about his presumptive running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin?

50-Word Dash: Sept. 3, 2008
A one-sided question: Why is it that when a woman, who is also a mother, runs for political office, people question who will care for her children? I have not heard anyone questioning a man, who happens to be running for political office, who will care for his children.

I am a member of a small and not wealthy church in Lakehead. We have stairs that are crumbling from age and we had hoped to replace them with a wheelchair ramp using labor from our congregation.

Sowell: Obama's ‘change': The same old leftism
One of the few political cliches that makes sense is that "In politics, overnight is a lifetime."

Elias: Prop. 8 is a test of fading prejudices
‘There are no acceptable prejudices in the 21st Century," Hillary Clinton, the New York senator and former First Lady, asserted when she finally conceded her party's nomination to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in a mid-June speech.

It’s time to move foward on clean energy sources
I have lived in Shasta County for nearly 30 years with the last 15 years in Burney. As a business owner and a very active member of the Burney community, I come in contact with hundreds of people every week. The most discussed issue of late has been the proposed windmill project on Hatchet Ridge.

Bebensee: Salvage logging: Is there really any question?
Salvage logging to most folks is obviously the right thing to do and to do in a timely fashion. I would love to see a poll over this issue and put the issue to rest. Unfortunately Patty Gomez ("Speak Your Piece, Aug. 25) got a hold of a piece of junk science and took this to be factual.

On the opening day of the Olympics Russian troops moved into the Republic of Georgia. Has the Cold War begun again?

Leftist ideologues like Joan Manning (Aug. 27), prideful of their sensitivity to nuances, typically engage in stereotyping. She tendentiously catalogs the vices of McCain voters, and the virtues of Obama voters. Why not simply declare: conservative Republicans are demons, Liberal Democrats are angels. That is simplistic, shallow thinking.
