Haskins, Hall of Fame basketball coach, dies

EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- The glow from Don Haskins' greatest triumph was mostly a memory when Disney decided to take another look. Then came the movie "Glory Road" and a whole new generation learned what Bob Knight already knew about his old friend's career - and legacy.

"Don got more out of his teams and players than any coach who has ever coached college basketball," Knight said.

Haskins, the Hall of Fame coach credited with helping break color barriers in college sports in 1966 when he used five black starters to win a national basketball title for Texas Western, died Sunday. He was 78.

Broyles has best debut ever by an OU receiver

NORMAN — As he strolled off the field, Ryan Broyles felt the adulation of Section 33 at Owen Field.

"Way to go, Ryan!” one fan shouted. The other 30 or so clapped and hollered as Broyles vanished into the tunnel.

Finally, the next Mark Clayton was unveiled.

Oklahoma's budding star dazzled 84,476 onlookers Saturday and unleashed the finest debut by a Sooner receiver in school history.

Broyles caught seven passes for 141 yards and a touchdown as the fourth-ranked Sooners pulled away from Cincinnati 52-26.

"You saw No. 85, he's pretty special,” defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "Some of those were Mark Clayton-esqe plays.

Fannie, Freddie deal helps some borrowers, not all

NEW YORK (AP) -- The government's historic bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Sunday will be good news to homebuyers and some homeowners hoping to refinance if it leads to lower mortgage rates, as experts expect.

But for homeowners already behind on their mortgage payments, or who owe more than their homes are now worth, the plan unveiled Sunday by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson offers little in the way of extra relief.

"The bailout will give the mortgage industry a stability that we haven't had in a couple of years," said Rich Cosner, president of Prudential California Realty. "But frankly no, it won't help (struggling borrowers) to refinance."

Owls' late goal drops Sooners' soccer squad at home

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's soccer team dropped its second consecutive game today and suffered a 1-0 loss to visiting Rice.

The outcome was eerily similar to Friday's loss at North Texas, as the Sooners surrendered the game-winning goal on the opposition's corner kick late in the contest.

The scoreless game ended when Anne Candee found the back of the net off her corner kick as the ball floated over and behind OU goalkeeper Lisa Jett on the far post. The unassisted goal propelled the Owls to claim victory in the first meeting in the series with the Sooners.

Oklahoma falls to 1-4 overall on the season and Rice improves to 3-1.

Top-ranked Nadal knocked off by Murray at US Open

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rafael Nadal hunched over, his chest heaving, his hopes of reaching his first U.S. Open final fading fast. No one ever seems to run Nadal ragged. Andy Murray managed to do just that.

Exhibiting precisely the sort of winner-vaporizing, opponent-demoralizing defense new No. 1 Nadal usually employs, Murray reached his first Grand Slam final by completing a stunning, rain-interrupted 6-2, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 upset of the Spaniard on Sunday.

"He beat me because he was better than me," acknowledged Nadal, whose 19-match winning streak at major tournaments ended. "When he's playing aggressive, he can beat everybody."

New OU linebacker firms up job

NORMAN — Travis Lewis' job security has been fragile. Maybe not much longer. The OU weakside linebacker had a monster game Saturday against Cincinnati: 12 tackles, two sacks, two other tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry. “He played to his potential,” said Sooner middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds. “He's a great player.” Lewis is a redshirt freshman from San Antonio who was listed behind Austin Box in the spring and, after Box was injured in August, behind junior-college transfer Mike Balogun.

OU, Cincy go for it on 4th down

Oklahoma and Cincinnati were in gambling moods Saturday, with the two teams combining to go 6-of-8 on fourth down plays. The Sooners emerged as the big winner, getting two key stops and converting all three of their fourth-down tries, including one for a late touchdown. OU's stops may have provided the biggest payoff. Cincy coach Brian Kelly said he felt a need to keep up with a Sooner offense that was rolling up yards and points. “I knew we couldn't get by,” with field goals, Kelly said. “We had to convert in every opportunity. We were up against it and trying to get back on track.

Cincinnati WR nets record total yardage

NORMAN — Oklahoma fans gathered alongside the Owen Field visitors ramp Saturday, not to boo or catcall, but to call out a 'Cat for a job well done. “Hey, No. 1, good game.” “Nice job, No. 1.” “Great game, No. 1.” They may not have known his name – Mardy Gilyard – but they appreciated his game. It's not easy to get the attention of Sooner fans, yet Gilyard did and in dual fashion. A junior wide receiver, Gilyard produced a Cincinnati school-record 365 all-purpose yards: 119 receiving and 246 on five kickoff returns, including a 97-yard bolt for a touchdown.

OU Report Card

Sam Bradford: A Career highs in completions (29, in 38 attempts), yards (395) and touchdowns (five). Also matched a career high with two interceptions, but one was off Juaquin Iglesias' bobble and the other was a deep ball. Bradford's 395 yards were the third-most in OU history and he now has 43 career TD passes, trailing only Jason White and Josh Heupel. Cleanliness: C This might be ahead of Godliness for Bob Stoops, and after few penalties vs. Chattanooga, OU was more sloppy vs. Cincinnati, with eight penalties for 92 yards, plus two after-the-play personal fouls that were offsetting and didn't count.

Q&A: OU tight end Jermaine Gresham

You had a tough game against Chattanooga, with two dropped passes that would have been touchdowns. Were you glad Sam Bradford went back to you this week, seven catches, two TDs? “I just approached it the same way. I took the same procedures. Things happened to fall my way this game. This offense will be special if we play hard every down. We do that, we should be able to do whatever we want.” Why were you able to get open over the middle so often today? “Their ‘backers were expecting a lot of run. That opened me up over the ‘backers. I like having the ball. I love it when a running back springs off one of my blocks. That's probably my best feeling.

Notebook: OU makes 2nd half changes

Oklahoma led 21-13 at halftime, but had surrendered 245 yards of offense and allowed Cincinnati wide receiver Mardy Gilyard and others to run free in the secondary. The second half was a different story, with the Bearcats managing just 81 yards over the final two quarters. “We came in at halftime with emphasis on the fact that we had to stop them,” said OU defensive end Jeremy Beal. “The proper adjustments were made that obviously worked, because we played much better in the second half. “In the third quarter especially, I think we did a good job at holding them and getting after their quarterback. We had a great third quarter.
