It's now clear what the California Correctional Peace Officers Association is up to, and it's worse than we imagined. The union that represents prison guards is circulating a draft bill that would make an end run around the normal bargaining process to give the union a pay raise. The union wants the Senate to do the dirty work by "gutting and amending" Assembly Bill 1279 by Assemblyman Joe Coto, D-San Jose, which originally dealt with child care. Read comments

We've been warning the Fresno County Board of Supervisors that budgeting in this poor economy must be realistic, and not aimed at delaying difficult decisions. But the supervisors have yet to grasp the concept that you can't spend more money than you have. Scheppers' plans don't include Fresno State

Pitcher Tanner Scheppers, who was drafted in the second round of the major league draft in June but did not sign with a team, will not return to Fresno State for his senior year. Scheppers said Wednesday that he was academically eligible to return but that Fresno State no longer was the "correct fit," as the right-hander turns his focus on rehabbing his shoulder and improving his stock for the next year's draft.
